Summer camp season is exciting for children and requires careful planning for parents. At Shining Light Academy, we are dedicated to ensuring your child’s summer camp adventure is full of fun, learning, and personal growth. Here are five steps to help your child get the most out of summer camp this year.
- Set Mutual Expectations. Discuss what your child is looking forward to and what might worry them. This helps set realistic expectations and equips them with the vocabulary to express their feelings during their time away. Our camp is open to children from ages 3 to fifth grade. For some children, this is their first experience being away from home during the day.
- Build Self-Reliance. Reinforce the importance of independence and self-reliance. Encourage small decision-making opportunities at home to build confidence in their choices. When they can solve minor problems, they’re better equipped to tackle bigger ones at camp.
- Allow Room for Growth. Summer camp is a fantastic place to learn and grow. Let your child have their own experiences, including making mistakes and learning from them independently. Our schedule includes field trips and instructional shows.
- Nurture Social Skills. Encourage your child to be open to meeting new friends. The camp is open to students at the school and the surrounding community. Discuss the qualities of a good friend and how to be one. Activities at our summer camp provide great opportunities to hone their teamwork skills.
- Reassure Them. You will be available if they need you, but summer camp is more exciting than being home. Have conversations about their time at camp each day. Celebrate all accomplishments, big or small. Acknowledge their effort and growth as they get used to a new routine.
By taking these steps, you can help prepare them for an enriching time at our summer camp. Summer camp should be a time of learning and personal development that lasts a lifetime. Contact us about summer camp or schedule a tour of our campus.
