It’s easy to get caught up in the importance of academics. After all, grade point averages and test scores are what will determine college acceptances and even future scholarship funds. But as important as academics are, an “all work and no play” educational structure isn’t sustainable. After-school programs are important, not only for recreation, but also for your student’s future.

Life Skills
After-school programs like sports, theater, and art can be fun, but they’re more than just recreation. Interacting with other students over a shared interest can help build social skills that will last a lifetime. Whether it’s leadership skills, public speaking, collaboration, or learning to be a supportive team member, the skills gained in after-school programs are often just as important for your student’s future as academic scores.
Discovering Passions
It’s hard to even guess at what the future may hold. What your child will become in the future may seem mysterious and unknowable for a while. While some children find their knack for a particular subject right away, others take their time to find what they want to do. The best thing you can do as a parent is to be supportive and offer lots of opportunities to explore different possibilities and interests.
After-school programs are a safe playground for your children to get creative, make friends, and explore who they want to be. What seems like a simple art show or basketball game could be the spark for beautiful life opportunities beyond our imagination.
